Island reading: Radio National’s best reads
Author: Guest blogger
Sarah Kanowski, Producer, Saturday Extra, ABC Radio National
*Nemesis, Philip Roth – in these late works Roth can sometimes slide into self-parody, but I can’t resist the intensity, intelligence and outrageous humour of that voice.
*The Best of It, Kay Ryan – the collected works of the current American poet laureate: taut, muscular, unsentimental but deeply moving poetry.
* 12 Edmonstone Street, David Malouf –I’ll be with family in Brisbane over Christmas and want to revisit this quietly beautiful meditation on place and memory.
* Life and Fate, Vasily Grossman – this acclaimed Russian magnum opus has been on my To Read shelf for a number of summers. Maybe this will finally be Grossman’s year.
* Momma Zen: Walking the crooked path of motherhood, Karen Maezen Miller – summer will be rich with the delights and challenges of my 3 year old and 1 year old. I can use any help I can get!
I’ll also be reading many back issues of Island magazine. As new editor I’ll be immersing myself in back issues of this fabulous Australian magazine, enjoying its short stories, essays, poetry, memoir and environmental writing
