No yawns, so I must have been good

Author: RNFutureTense

Antony here… I gave a lecture to students at La Trobe this week re our Generation F project. Hard to judge these things, but the fact that no one yawned has to be good.

Lawrie Zion (ex JJJ and The Australian) is my co-conspirator. He’s in charge of the journalism programme at La Trobe.

Will give more details on Generation F when things move along a bit.

If you want to listen to the audio of my presentation it’s here.

We’re launching a new initiative with La Trobe University.

We’re calling it Generation F (Future).

It’s about getting the future visions of young people to air. It’s also about audience participation.

Here’s a flyer from La Trobe’s online magazine called ’Upstart’.

New tag line…

Author: RNFutureTense

Here’s our new tag line…

‘Future Tense – new ideas, new approaches, new technologies’

The idea is to better define the program – as much for those within ABC Radio National still adjusting to the demise of the Media Report, as for the wider audience.

Let us know what you think?

Our brief (in case you were wondering)…

Author: RNFutureTense

A few weeks back Errol Simper in The Australian wrote a piece which followed on from our interview with Douglas Rushkoff about the dangers of becoming a slave to media technology.

The article contained both a bouquet and a brickbat. You can read it here.

No problems from our end about what he wrote. However it did occur to me that perhaps there was still confusion in some minds about the focus of the program.

So, let me be brief - here is our brief. Our program brief that is. Thought it a good idea to let people know exactly what our mission is as determined by the powers that be here at ABC Radio National….

DESCRIPTION

Charting changes and probing predictions in a rapidly advancing technological culture.  Presented by Antony Funnell

PROGRAM MISSION

  • To describe and attempt to make sense of trends, both underway and predicted, within the context of a rapidly globalising, technological world.
  • To explore social, cultural, political and economic fault lines arising from rapid change
  • To address environmental sustainability in the context of ideas and technologies for a greener future
  • To explore opinions, ideas, schemes, blueprints and speculations, fanciful and part-realised, and to unpack the assumptions behind these projections.

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • General Australian audience, with potentially younger skew
  • Technologically aware and used to multi-platform participation
  • Explicitly welcoming of international audience

EDITORIAL CONTENT

  • Stories will be drawn from the big changes affecting the modern world: unyielding technological innovation; flattening of social structures, fall of tradition and reorganisation of authority; mass urbanisation and consumerism; and emerging mass green sensibility.
  • Will ask:  What appears to be changing? What is predicted? How might it affect individual lives and communities?
  • Expert speakers will provide the spine of the program
  • Non expert interviews will help illustrate ideas
  • Will incorporate panel discussions, forums and debates as appropriate
  • Will incorporate the ideas, opinions and sound of active audience

STYLE AND SOUND

  • Pacy and energetic presentation to meet 0830 expectation
  • Music and other production elements to create vitality
  • Thematic as appropriate
  • Audience voice to be integral

A reminder about our mission…

Author: RNFutureTense

antony_funnell

It’s been more than a year now since we launched and I think it timely to remind you (and ourselves) of our mission. Here’s what I said in the first program back in late January 2009…

‘Our brief is to look at new developments and trends across a broad range of topic areas, and to introduce you to creative thinkers, cutting edge technologies and new approaches.

‘In coming weeks we’ll explore the concept of online bereavement; we’ll take you 60 metres below one of Australia’s major cities for a look at some state-of-the-art tunnelling equipment; and we’ll find out about an agricultural concept called ‘vertical farming’. They’re just a few of the things we’ve got planned.

‘Now, there are far too many people out there involved in promotion and spin, so we’ll endeavour, always, to maintain a critical eye.’

Are we walking the talk, as the Americans say? Let us know…
